Tips to Make Your Home Airtight

You might be concerned about making your home airtight. An airtight home will allow your cooling or heating devices to function in a more efficient and hence cost effective manner. An airtight home does not have any leakage points. Hence, airtight homes cool or heat up at a faster rate. Air testing will identify the various exit points of air in your house. You can then seal these exit points and make your home more efficient.

Places that are not airtight and allow air to pass through are given below:

Attic: - Air can pass from the attic to the upper floors through gaps and cracks in the ceiling. The roof trap is also a place where air leaks can occur. Make sure the ceiling is sealed appropriately and seal the roof trap with a foam edging strip.

Electrical switch points – If you have stud walls air can escape through electrical connection points. Turn off your main circuit breaker and ensure if your power is off. Remove your wall’s light or power switch plate and seal the area between the wall and the box with foam. You can replace the wall plate and install foam weather-strip gasket. After the seal has dried you can switch the circuit breaker back on.

Plumbing pipes –
Check the pipes under sinks and seal their path through the wall. The holes made between rooms allow this air to pass through.

Air testing and air pressure tests will allow you to recognise the various places which need to be sealed in your home.
